Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a lean management technique used to analyze and improve the flow of materials and information required to bring a product or service from its beginning to the customer. It provides a visual representation of all steps, both value-adding and non-value-adding, involved in a process. By identifying bottlenecks, waste, and inefficiencies, VSM helps organizations streamline operations, reduce lead times, and enhance overall productivity.
Developed by the Toyota Production System, VSM extends beyond simple process mapping by incorporating the flow of both physical products and the necessary information that controls and guides that flow. It’s a critical tool for understanding the current state of a process and designing an optimized future state. The ultimate goal is to maximize customer value while minimizing waste.
