LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has moved to institutionalize regular dialogue with the business community, an initiative designed to enhance trade ties with the United States and streamline import-export processes. Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi announced that these stakeholder consultations will become a permanent fixture on the customs operational calendar, aiming to resolve bottlenecks and improve cargo clearance efficiency.
This strategic shift aims to foster a more predictable and transparent trade environment, crucial for attracting foreign investment and facilitating international commerce. The NCS’s commitment to ongoing engagement reflects an effort to directly address operational challenges faced by businesses, thereby strengthening the economic corridor between Nigeria and the U.S.

These include the implementation of an Advance Ruling system, which provides importers with binding tariff and origin information before goods are shipped, and the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme. The AEO program certifies trusted businesses, promising expedited clearance and reduced inspections.
Additional modernizations include enhancements to the Post Clearance Audit system, designed to ensure compliance and recover revenue more effectively after goods have been cleared. The NCS is also working to improve scanning integration and overall cargo clearance procedures, which are vital for reducing delays at ports and border points.
The American Business Council (ABC) has expressed strong support for these reforms and the new dialogue structure. ABC President Nneka Enwereji welcomed the engagement, describing it as productive and a clear indicator of the NCS’s dedication to improving Nigeria’s business environment. The ABC also encouraged the Customs Service to expedite solutions to existing operational issues impacting businesses.
