HOUSTON, USAAstronauts venturing to the Moon under NASA’s Artemis program will soon be outfitted with advanced base layers designed by the luxury fashion house Prada, in collaboration with aerospace firm Axiom Space.

The new Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG) is set to be integrated into the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), aiming to provide enhanced comfort and operational capabilities for extended spacewalks.

The Prada-designed LCVG, unveiled over the weekend, represents a significant upgrade to the thermal regulation and ventilation systems essential for human survival in the harsh lunar environment. This collaboration underscores a growing trend of integrating high-performance, sophisticated design into critical aerospace components.

The garment is engineered to circulate chilled water across the astronaut’s body, effectively managing heat generated during strenuous extravehicular activities. Simultaneously, it ensures a continuous supply of fresh oxygen to the face area while removing exhaled carbon dioxide through the suit’s life-support system.

A key advancement highlighted by Axiom Space is the inclusion of a “fully redundant cooling circuit,” designed to ensure astronaut safety and comfort during prolonged lunar surface operations, such as the planned eight-hour spacewalks on the Moon’s South Pole.

Russell Ralston, Axiom Space‘s SVP of spacecraft development, confirmed that the materials chosen for the LCVG possess microbial-resistant and antifungal properties. This feature is intended to maintain hygiene and prevent degradation of the garment between uses, a crucial consideration for long-duration missions where laundry facilities are unavailable.

While specific material compositions remain proprietary, Prada’s expertise in engineered knitting and innovative design concepts, combined with advanced 3D modeling, has contributed to what the companies describe as a “high-performance” suit.

This Prada-Axiom collaboration is part of the broader Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon by 2028, specifically targeting the lunar South Pole for exploration. The successful deployment of these advanced spacesuits is critical for achieving the program’s ambitious goals for extended lunar surface operations.
